Our History

ANWThe Minneapolis Heart Institute (MHI) was formed in 1981 as a physician-owned, cooperative effort of several independent groups of heart specialists. MHI was established to help prevent and combat the universal problem of heart disease, and has since set numerous milestones in cardiovascular care.

  • In 1985, MHI/ANW were among three centers in the U.S. to receive approval to implant the artificial heart.
  • MHI physicians were the first in the Midwest to implant the Symbion total artificial heart (TAH). They were also the first to implant the Symbion J7-70 TAH in a woman.
  • In 1988, MHI physicians performed one of the first double-lung transplants in the U.S.
  • MHI physicians were the first in the Midwest to implant the Novacor Left-Ventricular Assist System (LVAS). This experimental device is used as a bridge to human heart transplantation or to support the heart until it regains function.
  • MHI physicians were the first in the nation to use an artificial vein graft in bypass surgery.
  • MHI surgeons are among the first surgeons in the nation to use a new surgical technique for bypass surgery. The Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Bypass, or "trapdoor" procedure, costs far less than traditional bypass procedures and may greatly reduce the risk of complications.

The Minneapolis Heart Institute is committed to making a difference in the quality of life of the people we serve, both here in our own community and around the world.
