PRIMO CABG Study
Study of: Pexelizumab drug
Worldwide, more than 800,000 patients undergo CABG (coronary artery bypass graft) surgery each year. Twenty-eight (28%) suffer serious cardiac outcomes. Medical literature reports that the majority of these events occur in patients who require the use of the heart-lung bypass machine during surgery. Pexelizumab is a new investigational (experimental) drug, which has potential to reduce the risk of serious adverse events.
PRIMO CABG involves intravenous administration of the study drug or placebo in patients requiring the use of the heart-lung bypass machine. Randomization (similar to flipping a coin) is the process used to select which arm of the study the patient is assigned to.
The goal of the study is to see if Pexelizumab reduces the incidence of serious adverse cardiac complications.
