Congestive Heart Failure Research
New therapies are currently being studied in the area of heart failure research. There is no doubt the medical treatment for heart failure continues to evolve. The COMPANION trial, sponsored by Guidant Corporation, is ongoing at MHIF. This biventricular pacing study compares medical therapy and biventricular pacing either with or without an implantable defibrillator. This study is designed to focus on all-cause mortality and all-cause hospitalization. Currently, biventricular pacing is FDA approved for the treatment of heart failure, but this clinical trial focuses on the unanswered question regarding all-cause mortality and hospitalization.
The CHF physicians of the Minneapolis Heart Institute are members of the Minneapolis Heart Failure Consortium (MHFC.) The MHFC consists of health care professionals dedicated to furthering research and education concerning the problem of heart failure. It will do so by facilitating cooperative educational and investigative efforts among individual medical groups and institutions involved in the care of patients with this condition. We plan to conduct innovative investigator-initiated research, create a vehicle for the rapid conduct of Phase 2 and mechanistically-oriented Phase 4 Trials, and plan high-quality educational activity to the cardiology community. We also will participate in public education and policy regarding the problem of heart failure in the community. The MHFC is a special project of the Minneapolis Medical Research foundation. The consortium members are physicians and nurses practicing at the following institutions: Hennepin County Medical Center, United Hospitals, Healtheast Hospitals, VA Medical Center, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis Heart Institute, Mercy Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, Park Nicollet Medical Center and the University of Minnesota.
