The MANTRA II Trial: The Monitoring and Actualization of Noetic Trainings (MANTRA) in Cardiovascular Medicine Study-Phase II
Study of:
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of two integrative therapy interventions on clinical outcomes in patients undergoing coronary interventions such as angioplasty or stent. The integrative therapies being studied are “hands on” bedside music-imagery-touch and/or double-blind off-site intercessory prayer. Brief surveys that look at spirituality, stress level and quality of life are conducted.
Data to date suggest that integrative (noetic) interventions may produce subjective benefit and may be cost effective. But data on the cardiovascular safety and efficacy of noetic interventions are rare. Studying angioplasty patients presents a unique but clinically relevant opportunity to illuminate the value of directed noetic interventions. The stress response in patients with heart disease is well known to be detrimental. This may be even truer of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions (angioplasty or stent). Based on the data from the MANTRA Pilot Study, noetic intervention may offer a unique, effective and cost-effective therapy in this setting.
