Periscope Trial
Study of: A double-blind, randomized, comparator-controlled study in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus comparing the effects of Pioglitazone HCL versus glimepiride on the rate of progression of coronary atherosclerotic disease as measured by intravascular ultrasound.
The purpose of this study is to compare the diabetes drugs Actos (pioglitazone HCl) and Amaryl (glimepiride) to see if either drug causes a change in the atheroma (fatty plaques) in coronary arteries. Both drugs are approved by the FDA for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. They are considered investigational for heart disease. The study will also compare the rate of cardiac events as well as the safety and efficacy of the two drugs over an 18 month time period.
