PAPP-a and Key Inflammatory Markers of Vulnerable Plaque: Epidemiology and Comparison in a High-Risk Population

Study of:
This study is designed to evaluate the relationship between blood levels of PAPP-a and other inflammatory markers in patients with acute coronary syndrome. PAPP-a (pregnancy associated plasma protein), is a new identifying marker which is present in unstable plaques, but not in stable plaques. Additionally, we are studying whether statin treatment would decrease PAPP-a and other inflammatory markers present in blood and urine. Participants will be randomized to either 10 mg or 80 mg of Lipitor (atorvastatin). Through blood and urine tests, the change in the levels of inflammatory markers will be assessed after 1 and 6 months of statin therapy.
