Coronary Calcium Scoring/What the Scores Mean
Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring
- The extent of coronary artery calcium is expressed as a score adjusted for age and sex.
- All HeartScan Minnesota patient scores are compared to a database of over 19,000 asymptomatic people of the same age and gender.
- EBCT scores of 400 or more are considered high enough to warrant some type of medical treatment or intervention.
What The Scores Mean:
|
EBCT Calcium Score |
Plaque burden & probability of significant CAD |
CV risk implications |
Recommendations |
|
0-10 |
5% 0r lower probability of significant obstructive disease |
Very Low to Low |
No specific work-up would be recommended. Although primary prevention of CV disease should be discussed |
|
11-100 |
Less than 20% probability that obstructive disease is present |
Moderate |
Daily use of coated aspirin and/or cholesterol lowering therapies should be considered |
|
101-400 |
Moderate atherosclerosis and a high likelihood of moderate, non-obstructive CAD |
Moderately High |
An aggressive approach to lipid lowering, diabetes, hypertension, smoking, dietary counseling is recommended. Daily coated aspirin use and regular aerobic exercise should be instituted. Exercise stress testing and cholesterol lowering medication should be considered |
|
>400 or > 75th percentile for age and sex |
Advanced atherosclerotic plaque present. Moderate likelhood of at least one obstyructive coronary stenosis and high CVD risk |
High |
Undergo aggressive risk strategies listed above. Should be considered for a stress imaging study such as stress nuclear or echo testing. | |
