Definition
Lymphedema occurs when fluid collects in the limb tissues, causing arm or leg swelling. This may result from an obstruction of the lymphatic vessels or may be congenital. Treatment may consist of support stockings, medications, exercise and manual lymph drainage.
Common Symptoms
- Swelling in the arms and legs, which may occur due to one’s heredity or after operations for some for some common cancers (for example, breast or prostrate cancer.)
- A constant achy sensation due to swelling in the arms or legs.
Associated Risk
- Skin infection (cellulitis)
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Decreased limb function
