Women’s Heart Health Program

Mission: We will educate women of the risks of heart disease, support women and families in creating and choosing lifestyles which strengthen heart health, nurture and care for women with heart disease, and add to the body of research specific to women and cardiovascular disease. Clinical care, education, and research are the pillars of our mission.

Advisory Board: Another unique feature to this program is the Women's Heart Health Advisory Board comprised of women in the community with an interest in women and heart health and individuals involved in the Women's Program.

Clinical Care

We have two paths of care women may choose – one, most appropriate if you have several risk factors, is to be seen by a provider and dietitian with our Women’s Heart Health Program. The other opportunity best suited if you are at low risk for heart disease is to participate in the Women’s Heart Health Assessment – a screening with a nurse to learn how you can improve your heart health.

You have access to a Women's Heart Health Program at one of the region’s premier providers of cardiovascular services — the Minneapolis Heart Institute® at Abbott Northwestern Hospital and the Center for Outpatient Care in Edina, WestHealth Campus in Plymouth in addition to the Brainerd and Crosby communities. Our Women's Heart Health Program tailors cardiovascular care to fit the specific needs of women.

Your heart assessment with a cardiovascular specialist includes:

  • health history
  • cardiovascular risk screening test
  • family history of cardiovascular disease
  • complete cardiovascular physical exam
  • education about your individual cardiovascular risk factors
  • blood tests, including lipids and glucose
  • calculation of body mass index (BMI)
  • development of an individualized plan (you may want to share these results with your primary care physician).

Nutrition consultation that includes:

  • assessing your current nutritional intake
  • reinforcing your positive dietary decisions
  • creating a nutrition plan that fits your lifestyle and meets the dietary needs of women.

After identifying your cardiovascular risk, you and your provider will outline a personalized plan for optimizing your cardiovascular health.

Additional Services

In addition to the Women's Heart Health Program services listed above, you also may access an exercise physiologist through the LiveWell Fitness Center at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. The LiveWell Fitness Center was created to support your journey to optimal health by offering a full spectrum of programs and services to enhance your current lifestyle.

Most insurance providers do not cover the cost of an exercise physiologist. LiveWell Fitness Center offers a variety of programs and services at various prices ranging from $65 to $375.
